Toddler Teeth Development

Generally, the baby teeth initially come in from the middle of the mouth and work their way toward the back. The first tend to appear around six to twelve months, and a child will eventually have 20 teeth in total by their third birthday. But as with all things concerning kids, this timeline and order can vary from child to child…we’ll keep an eye on them at their preventive care visits to make sure everything is alright!

What is Teething?

Teething is the process of the baby teeth pushing on and through the gums as they naturally erupt, and as you can imagine, it can be quite uncomfortable. It often leads to grumpy toddlers and grumpy parents, but we can offer tips to make this process easier for your entire family. We’ll point you in the right direction as far as safe and effective teething products are concerned, plus we’re happy to be a sounding board to vent frustration—being a parent is hard!

How to Clean Your Toddler’s Teeth and Gums

Toddlers are a bit too young to brush on their own, so using a child-sized brush and a rice-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste, you should ideally clean your child’s teeth and mouth for two minutes at least twice a day (once in the morning and evening). It’s also wise to have them rinse with water after any snack, and you should start flossing before bed as soon as they have any teeth touching.
