The Road to Recovery: 6 Tips to Help Your Child Heal from Tooth Extraction

The tooth extraction appointment is done, your child made it through like a trooper, and now you’re headed home. The recovery phase has officially begun, and it’s just as important as the treatment itself. How the next few days go can make a big difference in how quickly and comfortably your child heals. Here are six things you can do to help them recover quickly and get back to smiling.

1. Keep the Gauze in Place

Right after extraction, your child’s dentist will place a bit of gauze over the socket to help a blood clot form. This clot is essential, as it protects the extraction site from damage and excessive bacteria while it heals. Encourage your child to bite down gently on the gauze and keep it in place for around 30 to 45 minutes.

2. Stick to Soft Foods

For the first few days, the extraction site in your child’s mouth will be tender and sensitive. Soft foods are going to be their best friend for now, so plan their menu around items like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs.

Avoid handing them anything crunchy, chewy, or spicy that could irritate the area or dislodge the clot. Also, it’s important to skip the straws! Any suction can disrupt the healing process.

3. Keep Things Cool

A little swelling is completely normal after an extraction. Applying a cold pack to the outside of your child’s cheek in 15-minute intervals during the first 24 hours can help reduce swelling and ease discomfort.

4. Manage Pain Proactively

Your child’s pediatric dentist may recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever, like children’s ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to keep discomfort manageable. If so, be sure to give the medication on schedule and read the label for proper dosage and limitations.

5. Encourage Rest

Kids bounce back fast, and their energy can seem infinite, but it’s important to keep them calm for the first couple of days. Plan out a couple of “cozy” days at home and take advantage of the time to bond. Movies, books, and board games are perfect for low-key time, complete with lots of hugs, encouragement, and praise.

6. Watch for Warning Signs

Most extractions heal without any complications, but it’s good to know what to look out for. Severe or worsening pain after the first couple of days, fever, or sustained swelling are all reasons to call their dentist. Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t seem right, it’s always okay to reach out.

With a little extra care and attention, your child will be back to their usual, smiling self before you know it!
