Frenectomy

We have 7 frenal attachments in our mouth. A frenum is normal and typically does not need treatment if it is not constricting movement or causing symptoms. When an infant or child has multiple symptoms related to this restriction, we call this a "tongue tie." The restriction of movement can cause difficulty in breastfeeding, sleeping, and/or speech. In other instances it can contribute to dental caries (due to difficulty in cleansing the area), gingival recession, diastema and digestive issues. A frenectomy is a procedure that releases the tie and fascia under the tongue or near the upper or lower lip allowing for normal range of motion. 

Dr Karr has completed extensive training in learning modernized approaches to this procedure to provide care to infants and children with these "tongue ties".

At Pediatric Dental Care, these concerns can be addressed with an efficient and simple procedure using a specialized soft tissue laser. There is no cutting or sutures involved. After the area is anesthetized, the frenum tissue is vaporized using light energy. Advanced laser tools mean better results, minimized to no bleeding, less discomfort, reduced risk of infection, shortened procedure time, and faster recovery. The healing is quick and the laser stimulates bio-regeneration and healing, leaving less chance of relapse.
