WHEN YOUR CHILD NEEDS URGENT DENTAL TREATMENT, DR. KARR IS READY TO HELP
Please keep the emergency number available and convenient. Kids will be kids and unfortunately accidents still happen. Knowing what to do in a timely fashion can produce the best result available.
- If your child knocks a baby tooth out, contact Dr. Karr but do not implant the tooth since it can potentially cause damage to the underlying developing permanent tooth.
- If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, contact Dr. Karr immediately. Rinse with water only and gently, do not scrub or clean the tooth. Re-implant the tooth in the socket immediately and hold it there with a clean washcloth. If this can't be managed, place the tooth in milk, saliva or water and get to a pediatric dentist office immediately. Call EM number if it is after hours. The faster the tooth is implanted, the better the chances of saving the tooth.
- What if a tooth is chipped or fractured? Contact Dr. Karr immediately. Rinse the mouth with water and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling if the lip was also injured. If you can find the piece of tooth, place in milk and bring with you to your appointment.
- What about a severe blow to the head or a jaw fracture? You need immediate medical attention. Keep in mind that an emergency medical team might be able to reach you faster than you can get to a hospital.
- Toothache? Over the counter ibuprofen or tylenol if your child is not allergic. Call Dr. Karr and visit the office promptly.
Mouthguard and facemasks during sports activities can greatly reduce dental injuries. Also, always use a car seat for young children and require seat belts for everyone else in the car. Child proof your home to prevent falls and electrical injuries. Regular check-ups provide your dentist an opportunity to discuss additional age-appropriate preventive strategies with your child.
